I learned to look into the well of Self
But what did I learn?
A face, perfectly reflected, gazed back at me,
Its eyes, its questing gaze, the true reflection of my own,
And though I begged aloud for knowledge
No voice ever answered from the well.
I undertook a journey
Which took me high upon the cliffs
Towering above the narrow cut
Which holds the well of Self.
Last night I tried to look into the well again
But I was so far away
That all I saw looking back at me
Was the dark, blank face of the abyss.
Still, I stared into it
All night long, silently, filled with desire;
I stared until my eyes teared and burned
And my vision blurred.
What came to me finally
Out of the chasm was a voice:
Small, mocking, cool and ironic, it asked:
"Yes? Did you want something?"
